Athearn GP15-1's-Mainstay
of the Joppa Sub Fleet!
I've been waiting 15 years for a
good model of this engine. You can follow the
progress of this unit and its' companions on the website as they are assembled.
The parts assortment that comes with the engine is ENORMOUS!! They include
the Blomberg "B" truck side frames as well...a complete interior...separate
battery box doors, and other parts needed to build your own GP15-1.
The battery box doors allow me to
use Cannon & Company sub base doors for the later version with the long
horizontal weld lines common on later GP15s, along with the hinges on the doors
directly under the cab. With Athearns' design here...it's a snap...simply
install the doors you want. I also would like to point out that the under
frame includes frame railing and draft gear box details...along with a superb
drive system in the model. Great starting point, to say the least!
You can see by the added
pictures...I have filled the oval cutout holes on the pilots with styrene dowel
and sanded them smooth. I have also removed the out-of-scale coupler plate
and installed a Railflyer plate in these photos...and Sergent Type E Couplers.
However, I have since changed the design a bit...and will be installing Details'
West No. 363 Scale coupler plate, so I may use the Sergent compatible shank Type
E. I have designed a new coupler box and mount for this coupler as
well...I will post pictures of these parts. They are made with
styrene channel and tubing, a drill press, and a set of calipers...Friend Brian
Banna has drawn up some etched steps for me...and I'll be adding them to the
GP15-1's before painting commences as well.
There are 12 GP15-1's in process
right now...mainly the first four will be ready for Collinsville 2012.
